Xbox Achievements are coming to the Nintendo Switch

The official list of Achievements for the Nintendo Switch version of Minecraft has been discovered, seemingly confirming that players on Nintendo’s console would be able to earn Xbox Achievements when the new version of the Minecraft video game launches sometime this year.

It’s been known for a while that Nintendo Switch owners would need to use an Xbox Live/Microsoft account for online play and cloud saves but the addition of Xbox Achievements was unknown.

In an interview with Giantbomb in 2017, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer said of the inclusion of Xbox Achievements in the Nintendo Switch version of Minecraft, “I don’t know yet. I’m guessing no. And this is a collaborative relationship between Nintendo and I. They don’t have Xbox Achievements on their platform. If they want us to, I would love to be able to do it. The relationship with Nintendo is incredibly strong.”

The Nintendo Switch actually won’t be the first non-Microsoft platform to support Xbox Achievements. A variety of iPhone and Android video games such as Age of Empires: Castle Siege are already powered by Xbox Live and have enabled crossplay between devices and the unlocking of Xbox Achievements for a while now. This will be the first time Xbox Achievements have appeared on a rival gaming console though.

In 2017, the Minecraft video game updated on Windows 10, Windows phone, Xbox One, iOS, and Android to enable crossplay between players on different hardware. This update was referred to as the Better Together update. This update has been expected to come to the Nintendo Switch since it was first announced however the upgrade has taken longer than expected for unspecified reasons. With the reveal of these Achievements though, it looks like it’s almost ready.
