Windows 10 October Update 2018 – It’s Done!

Staff Writer

The long awaited Windows 10 October Update is finally done! We saw the Fast ring and Slow ring come together in 17763.1 in its final colours two weeks ago. In a whirlwind of tweets and liveblogs and finally an all encompassing blog post, Microsoft today announced the “final” release of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, which you can download now (if you don’t already have it as a Windows Insider).

We saw at Microsoft Inspire, Microsoft bringing Windows and Office to form Microsoft 365 and at Microsoft Ignite last week bring features that make this process even easier with Windows Autopilot. Now today that realization hits home in this new update with fluent design, new features and improvements.

At OnMSFT.com we covered all these features in more depth, but here are the new features of the latest update to Windows 10 in a nutshell.

New Dark Theme

The Dark Theme comes to File Explorer. We have seen lots of apps over the course of this year have dark mode/dark themes and there was one left out, File Explorer.

New Clipboard Experience

The clipboard has had a big improvement to the way it works, now cloud enabled. You can now have multiple copies with the help of Win+V, plus if you use multiple devices you will have the same experience. Rather than having to send yourself an email or opening notepad on a shared drive to copy over to another device is a thing of the past, now you dont have to just log into that other device! First seen in Windows insider build 17666.

New Snipping Tool

Snipping Tool now has a successor, called Snip and Sketch. It’s very useful when you want to just clip a portion of the desktop or part of an article your reading. Press the Win+Shift+S keys to take a snip and check your pictures folder.  Also you can use it as your print screen button, to do this head to keyboard settings and you can also use it within the action center.

New Your Phone App

First showed at Build, A new app to connect with your phone, called Your Phone. The Your Phone App lets you easily access your photos and messages right from your big screen.  Left your phone somewhere else? Its easy to connect to through the app.

Swift Keys Update

Swift Keys are now enabled in the Tablet view of Windows 10. Makes it faster to type without a physical keyboard.

Storage Sense Update

Improvements to Storage Sense to help with your disk space by freeing up unused local storage by using OneDrive Cloud storage, though flagged content with “Always keep on this device” option is ignored.

Also including Edge improvements (New look Menus!), Xbox Game Bar improvements

Dont forget that Enterprise and Education customers, have 30 months support with 1809!
