Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 8.1 operating systems today so, while the company will still supply security updates and patches through to January 10th 2023, the operating system itself will no longer receive fixes or improvements.

Windows 8 (and 8.1) devices are already behind Windows 10 machines in regards to security, features, and support and almost all of the features that were popular in the former are still present in the latter, though slightly hidden.

Windows 10 users, for example, can still use a Windows 8-esque fullscreen Start Screen/Menu by navigating to All Settings, Personalization, Start, and checking the Use Start full screen option.

(updated to clarify that Windows 8.1 support ended on January 9th. Windows 8 support ended 2 years ago)
