The five best things about Windows 10 Creators Update

The launch of the Windows 10 Creators Update is just a few weeks away, and there are plenty of things to be excited for. There are multiple changes heading to the user interface, Cortana, and even some mixed reality features, so here is a look at the five best things about the Windows 10 Creators Update!

1– Compact Overlay Windows:

Many Windows 10 devices these days have small screens, which means it’s sometimes hard to multitask and get things done when you’re mobile. Luckily, with Compact Overlay Window in the Creators Update, UWP apps will enter a picture in picture mode at the corner of your screen, so you can multitask and continue the experience while switching into another app. Apps such as Skype and Movies & TV are set to support this feature, which means you will be able to take your video conversations and movies or TV shows almost everywhere you go in the OS.

2- Night Light (Blue Light Filter):

If you’re a night owl like me, you’re probably always on your Windows 10 device at odd hours of the night. This so, it’s reassuring to know that with the Night Light feature in the Windows 10 Creators Update, night owls will be able to use their Windows 10 PC without losing sleep. The new built-in setting eliminates the blue light which can keep you up at night. It is also designed so your computer’s display can adapt to the time of day, with warmer colors at night that are less intense on the eyes.

3- Improvements to Edge

Microsoft Edge is a great web browser, and despite what some may believe, it’s going to get even greater in the Windows 10 Creators Update. For instance, in the Creators Update, Edge will have an enhanced tab preview feature which lets you get a better view of your open tabs. You’ll also be able to set aside open tabs with one click, and them re-open them from a section on the top left side dubbed “tabs you’ve set aside.” There are also some minor changes across the Edge experience, such as the ability to open In Private Windows from the taskbar, and support for more Edge extensions. Other new features heading to Edge include the following.

  1. There will be a eBooks feature in the browser. The web browser will support the EPUB e-book format, and a new e-book store experience in the Windows Store. The feature will also integrate with Cortana, providing a spoken-word reading of e-books.
  2. The Creators Update will also introduce some enhanced security features to Edge, such as better control over Flash with Click-to-Run.
  3. Edge will support the Payment Request API, which means it will be able to integrate with Microsoft Wallet and other configurable methods. For online shoppers, this means that on certain websites, you will be able to checkout quickly using the information from Microsoft Wallet.
  4. 3D is also everything these days, so some might be pleased to learn that Edge in The Creators Update will support WebVR technologies to provide virtual reality experiences in the web browser. There is also support for the rotation of 360-degree content within the browser.

4– Game Mode

Let’s face it, not everyone has the money to purchase a high-end gaming PC to run the latest games. Fortunately, the Windows 10 Creators Update includes a Game Mode feature which will make Windows 10 adjust its resource allocation logic to prioritize a game when it’s running. Services and resources will also be scaled back or turned off in order to provide the best gaming experience, ensuring that your PC can devote all the resources necessary during long gaming sessions.

5- New System Colors and Themes

When you own a car or a home, you can customize it to fit your own needs. With the Creators Update, part of that same notion will apply to your Windows 10 PC. The Creators Update, includes new system colors and themes which make your Windows 10 PC even more personal. Unlike prior versions of Windows (where there were only pre-selected colors,) in the Creators Update, you will be able to pull up a color spectrum and choose a custom color for your Windows 10 system color.

Additionally, if you’re not so creative and would rather choose a pre-made theme, you should be aware that the Creators Update will introduce custom themes for Windows 10 via the Windows Store. My personal favorite is the Cats Anytime theme, because who does not like Cats? Much adorable!
