Online project hosting service GitHub has just released new usage stats this week and Microsoft currently tops the companies with the most open source contributors (via Business Insider). The Redmond giant currently has 16,419 employees contributing to open source projects on GitHub, though this data only refers to projects available publicly on the online service.
This is pretty significant news for the company who clearly embraced open-source and Linux under the new leardership of Satya Nadella. Visual Studio Code, the company's free and open-source code editor is also the sixth repository with the most open source contributors on GitHub as of today.
Clearly, a lot has changed since Microsoft's former CEO Steve Ballmer called Linux "a cancer" in the early 2000's. Today, the new Microsoft brought a Linux sub-system on Windows 10 and the company is also willing to open source many of its technologies including its development tools and artificial intelligence toolkits. Overall, the company seems do to what's necessary to stay relevant as Windows is no longer Microsoft's most important product. Let us know in the comments if you think Microsoft is right to embrace open source.
