Borderlands 3 sells 5 million copies in its first 5 days

It seems Borderlands 3 is already shaping to be a massive hit, as it has already sold 5 million copies in its five-day existence on the various digital storefronts. That’s roughly twice the amount that Borderlands 2 generated in the same time according to Eurogamer, which puts the new game in first place among fastest growing titles published by 2K Games. According to 2K’s president, David Ismailer:

“We are immensely grateful to everyone who played a role in making the Borderlands series the global, pop culture phenomenon that it is today, including hundreds of developers at Gearbox and many who have made this their life’s work. We also want to thank the Borderlands community. Mayhem does not happen by itself, and their passion for the series is what drives us to make each game an amazing experience.”

These hefty numbers are especially interesting given that Epic has chosen to make the title an Epic Games Store exclusive for those on PC. Even despite that, the concurrent player count peak of Borderlands 3 was about “twice-as-high” as that of its predecessor, according to the CEO of Gearbox Software, the game’s development company.

Another interesting note is that while 2K has chosen to keep Borderlands 3 from online digital stores on PC, Microsoft has chosen to bring its new Gears 5 game to both the Microsoft Store as well as Steam. Of course much of that game’s success is likely due to that it’s available to Xbox Game Pass users for free since launch.

In any case, we still have yet to see how the sales play in the long term. But given how popular the Borderlands franchise has always been, it looks to be making its way to a commercial success.

Were you among the almost five million people who purchased the game? What do you think about the game so far? Your thoughts are welcome below.
