Microsoft recently revealed that Windows 10 November 2019 Update (19H2) was ready for release. While the majority of readers on this site are Windows Insiders already running the latest build, here’s a quick guide for those of you who are new and want to be on the latest build of Windows 10.
You have two options. You can wait until the update is released, or grab the update from the Release Preview ring right now. The Release Preview ring gives you the ability to receive updates after they have passed the testing phase (known as the development branch).
(Update): One note, if you’re currently on the May 2019 Update and in the Windows Insider Slow Ring, if you change your Insider settings to Release Preview, you won’t be immediately offered the November 2019 Update. It will become available “in the coming weeks.” You can learn more in our post on the November 2019 release news, or just set your PC from Slow to Release Preview and sit back and wait.
Here’s what you need to do. First, join the Windows Insider program if you haven’t already done so. After that, while on your Windows 10 computer, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program, and click the “Get Started” button.
Once you tap or click on “Get Started,” link your Microsoft Account. This will be the same email account you used to register for the Windows Insider Program.
After you have linked your Microsoft Account, you will be given three options. Select the option titled “Just files, apps, and drivers.” This option will get you to the Release Preview ring and get you the November 2019 update.
Once you select “Just files, apps, and drivers,” tap or click on the confirm button. You will be asked to restart your PC, so make sure you tap or click on those options.
After your PC reboots, you can go back to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program and make sure it shows “Release Preview” as your setting. You can also be daring and select the Fast Ring or Slow Ring, if you want to test developmental builds of Windows 10.
You can now go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, to check for the latest update. You will now see the November 2019 Update waiting for you. Enjoy! For all things Windows 10, keep an eye on our Windows 10 page here.Further reading: Microsoft, Windows 10
