With the death of Groove Music, and also Cortana’s song recognition, Windows 10 users have been left without a way to control their music using Cortana. Well, noted by Neowin, it turns out that Cortana recently received the ability in the production ring Windows 10 Creators Update (and higher) to allow Spotify users to control their sounds.

Users can now link their Spotify account (regardless of premium status) in Cortana’s notebook to allow for the Windows 10 digital assistant to control Spotify music. It’s limited to English and the United States for now, but it’s still a nice feature since users can ask Cortana to play certain types of music or even ask what’s playing.

According to Reddit, you can try out these queries with Cortana, both while your PC is locked, and while it is unlocked.

  • Play dance music on Spotify
  • Play my discover weekly playlist on Spotify
  • Play <Artist/Track/Title/Genre/Mood> on <AppName>
  • Play some Drake
  • Play focus music
  • Play rock music
  • Play my tracks

Keep in mind that you can always try out this feature for yourself if you live outside the US by changing your region and language, but it’s not always guaranteed to work. We hope Microsoft will expand this feature to other regions soon, but for now, it’s a good start.
