Microsoft PowerToys brought some fun to Tuesday with the release of v0.16.0 that includes some bug fixes and stability updates, along with 4 new utilities including the always popular Image Resizer extension. To get everyone up to speed, PowerToys used to be a utility that would allow anyone to customize previous versions of Windows, and since its release in September 2019 for Windows 10, Microsoft has seen a lot of enthusiasm from the community with many developers wanting to contribute to PowerToys.

With today’s 0.16 release, Microsoft has made improvements to its utilities, documentation, and tools making it easier for the community to dive in. The major updates with this release include:

  • FancyZone improvements:
    • Multi-Monitor improvement: Zone flipping switching now works between monitors!
    • Simplified UX: Removed layout hot-swap and flashing due to multi-monitor lacking
  • New Utilities!
    • Markdown Preview pane extension
    • SVG preview pane extension
    • Image Resizer Window Shell extension
    • Window Walker, an alt-tab alternative
  • Updated and closed over 100 issues!
  • Testing improvements
    • 54 UX Functional tests
    • 161 new Unit tests

Hopefully, with the next release, Microsoft will enable a new auto-update feature for PowerToys and indicated that they already have a plan for it. For anyone interested in giving PowerToys a try, just visit their GitHub page to install and run it via GitHub.
