Microsoft wants “every type of gamer” on Xbox and Windows 10 with its coming line up
This year, Microsoft’s E3 presentation was noticeably different than the years before it. With a lack of speakers and more games shown than any other, the Xbox One definitely stood out to the crowd. From indie games to AAA titles, 42 games in total were paraded out with 22 of them being ‘console exclusive’ to the Xbox One. Only 4 of those will be exclusive to the console, however.
No doubt, E3 2017 was Microsoft’s statement of embracing versatility for video games. “It was a principle for the briefing overall that we wanted every type of game for every type of gamer,” Dave McCarthy explained to MCVUK this week. This doesn’t just mean different genres of games. While they showed multiplayer, single-player, indie, AAA, and more, Microsoft has opened its platform to much more than just its console.
The Head of Xbox Operations went on to highlight the Xbox Play Anywhere feature that many of its first-party line up and even some third-party have begun to adopt, meaning that when you purchase a game once via Xbox or Windows 10, it is yours across those devices.
“Your ability with first party titles from Microsoft – and a lot of the [email protected] ones, too – to do things like Xbox Play Anywhere where your license roams, right across those devices, is going to apply to whole first-party line-up.”
So what does this mean for Microsoft and its current console family? When Xbox Play Anywhere was first announced, many console enthusiasts were concerned that the this would be the end of Xbox usefulness. The controversial merge between Windows 10 and Xbox caused fans to believe that Microsoft was phasing out the console and discouraging couch play. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.
As McCarthy put it, “choice is becoming more and more critical to a gamer’s everyday life.” By showcasing the diversity of video games between Xbox One and Windows 10, Microsoft shows that it can deliver something that no other platform can through its roaming license and availability. With more Xbox Play Anywhere titles such as Forza MotorSport 7, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, and Sea of Thieves, players can see the value of playing through Microsoft’s market. Whether or not it is on the couch or at their desk.
