Skyrim is now one of the ten best-selling video games of all time

In his post-Starfield Direct interview with IGN, Bethesda director and legendary game designer Todd Howard confirmed that Skyrim now sold over 60 million copies worldwide. This is across all the platforms, and would put the massively open-world action-RPG in a pretty elite category as one of the top ten best-selling video games ever.

The 60 million units sold mark would put Skyrim in the no. 7 spot on that list, just behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with 62 million copies sold. The feat comes 12 years after the fifth mainline installment of The Elder Scrolls series was released—something which isn’t lost on Howard.

We’re sitting here it’s 12 years after Skyrim, we’re looking at a game that has over 60 million copies and all these people they’re still playing it. And so we have learned we need to build in from the beginning a game that has this long-term play though of…Hopefully people are playing Starfield a long time.”

Initially released in 2011, Skyrim has seen many rereleases including most recently an 10-year Anniversary Edition. The ultimate follow-up, The Elder Scrolls VI, will likely not be in player’s hands for a long time. The game’s trailer was unveiled 5 years ago, and nothing further has been seen of it since.
