XDA Developer finds a way to upgrade non-supported Windows Phones to Windows 10 Technical Preview

A recent hack, posted to XDA Developers forum by RustyGrom, reveals the ability to install Windows 10 Technical Preview on an AT&T Lumia 1520. RustyGrom found a way to trick the Windows Insider app into thinking any Windows Phone 8.1 is able to upgrade to Windows 10 Technical Preview.

RustyGrom was only able to do this to an AT&T Lumia 1520, but he does mention in his post that it could possibly be done with other Lumia devices, but it “might require tweaks to the XML. It is very possible to brick your phone with this.” So basically if you can’t wait for Microsoft to release Windows 10 Technical Preview to your Lumia, you can try the hack at your own risk.

It should be noted that if you are successful with RustyGrom’s 17 step process, you will have to change your phone’s ID, and may have to continue to do the 17 step process just to get minor updates to your phone as the “Phone Update” setting on your phone will be inaccessible. Despite the difficult 17-step process, some people have reported success on upgrading the following Windows Phones to Windows 10 Technical Preview: HTC 8X, HTC One M8, Lumia 930, Lumia 925, and Lumia 920.

For now I am going to wait until Microsoft has a stable version of Windows 10 Technical Preview for my Windows Phone. I am not about to risk bricking my Lumia Icon after I just got the Lumia Denim update. Even with directions, I am bound to mess something up. Besides, Gabriel Aul has already said that Windows 10 Technical Preview for Windows Phones will receive monthly updates at the very least if not faster than that. But, if you can’t wait a little longer, then try out RustyGrom’s hack in the link below at your own risk. But don’t say we didn’t warn you.
