Windows 8.1 Update 2 set for August Patch Tuesday, will be labeled as 'August Update'

Not too long ago, we reported that Windows 8.1 Update 2 would arrive on August 12th, but you probably won’t even notice. Update 2 is rather insignificant compared to Update 1, meaning nothing has changed on the surface.

Now, a new report from WindowsItPro is suggesting that this update will be referred to as “August Update” and will indeed be made available during August’s Patch Tuesday, which takes place August 12th. In fact, the report states that the update wont even be called “Update 2.”

The August Update will not be cumulative, meaning it will not include fixes and features from Update 1. “Unlike Update 1, the August Update is not a requirement for Windows 8.1 to continue to receive future updates, however, as noted above, Update 1 is required before the August Update will be offered,” the report adds.

Microsoft rolled out Update 1 for Windows 8.1 back in April of this year and it was a mandatory update. Windows 8.1 Update 1 brought several new features to the operating system. Some of the additions were done just to make the operating system more user friendly to the traditional keyboard and mouse users.

Update 2 was originally going to include the new Start Menu, but Microsoft decided to pull the feature and save it for Threshold. Update 2 will include no new features, and will most likely be preparing for Threshold when it launches in 2015.
