Windows 8.1 tips and tricks: Shut down, Restart, Sign out, and more via the Start Button
As we approach the general availability of Windows 8.1 on October 17th for Windows 8 users, we’re going to go over some simple tips and tricks for the operating system update until the day its released. In today’s tips and tricks feature, we will talk about an improvement Microsoft has added to Windows 8.1 in terms of shutting down your computer, restarting, or even signing out.
On Windows 8, in order to shut down or restart your computer, you would need to head over to the Charms bar, select Settings, then hit Power, then choose your desired action. This wasn’t good enough. In Windows 8.1, Microsoft has made it easier than ever to shut down or restart by simply allowing you to access these commands via the Start Button.
All you have to do is right click on the Start Button, or simply hit Win key + X, and you will see the option to Sign out, Sleep, Shut down, or Restart your computer. On a tablet, you can simply press and hold the Start button for the menu to appear. While this feature may not be earth shattering, it does make it rather convenient and somewhat mimics the old Start Menu we all loved.
This “power user” type menu has other features too, such as the ability to access other system commands and settings. This menu mimics the functionality we are all used to with the Start Menu that was removed post-Windows 7.
Windows 8.1 hits general availably on October 17th for Windows 8 users and will be available for download as a free update.Further reading: Microsoft, Windows 8.1
