Surface 3 gets its first firmware update since 2016

It’s been over two years since Microsoft last released a firmware update for the Surface 3, but the company has finally obliged. Indeed, a new update has been released for the Surface 3, bringing patches for Spectre and Meltdown flaws and more (via Windows Central.)

The newest firmware should be showing up now in Windows Update, and it bumps up the version numbers of Surface UEFI and Intel Display adapters. See the changelog below.

  • Surface UEFI – Firmware 1.51116.198.0: Resolves potential security vulnerabilities, including Microsoft security advisory 180002.
  • Intel(R) HD Graphics – Display adapters: 20.19.15.4835 improves compatibility with high resolution external displays on Windows 10 April 2018 Update.

The last update for the Surface 3 came in September of 2016, then to address modem stability. Microsoft no longer sells the Surface 3 in its stores, and all mentions were removed from the Microsoft last year. If you’re really interested, you can still find the device for cheap at other retailers, or just wait it out for the rumored 10-inch affordable Surface that is coming soon.
