Microsoft is adding a new Archive feature to its new cross-platform Skype app, for the times when you want to hide conversations instead of deleting them. The new feature is currently available in the latest preview release (126.96.36.199), which started rolling out on all platforms this week.
There are multiple ways to archive conversations in this new update, but the easiest one may be by just doing a right click or long press on a conversation and choosing “Archive conversation.” Once you do that, the conversation will disappear from your list of chats on all devices, but for convenience, its content will still be searchable in the app.
Archived conversations will reappear right after selecting the related contact in your contact list, but the Skype team may change this behavior depending on user feedback. The team is also planning to add the ability to see all your archived conversations at once.
This new Archive feature will certainly be nice to have, but we’re more excited about the new “SMS Connect” capability that also appeared in the latest preview builds. This feature is not functional yet, but according to its description, it will allow Windows and Mac users to send and receive text messages from an Android phone with the Skype for Android. Microsoft is planning a similar feature in the Your Phone app for Windows 10, but it will be interesting to see Skype’s latest take on a unified messaging solution.
