Microsoft Teams is set to receive a new update that will allow users to pin chat messages. The company has started testing the pinned messages feature in the Teams desktop client, and it’s available for all public preview users.

The new capability allows any chat participant to pin or unpin any specific message to the top of the chat window, making it visible to everyone. Once pinned, users can easily navigate to the original message in the chat thread by clicking on the pinned message. The feature is also supported in channel conversations in Teams. However, the app does not display the pinned posts at the top of the channel, and they show up in the information pane instead.

To get started, simply hover over the specific chat message you’d like to pin, click the (. . .) menu, and select the “Pin” option. Once that is done, the pinned message will instantly appear at the top of the conversation. Users will also be able to remove the pinned chat message or replace the currently pinned message with another one at any time.

Overall, the pinned messages experience is a nifty addition to Teams to help users keep track of important announcements within a chat. The feature works in Microsoft Teams chats with external participants and guest users, but only one message can be pinned at a time. This capability is already supported on competing platforms, such as Slack, and it’s great to see Microsoft Teams finally catching up.
