During a speech at the US Public Sector CIO Summit yesterday, Microsoft’s Panos Panay, the man in charge of the Surface device, went over the basics of the device and how the Surface Pro was actually designed as a PC rather than a tablet.

According to Panay, the Surface RT was designed as a tablet while the Surface Pro was designed as a PC. When it comes to battery life and the weight of the Surface Pro device, Panay reminded everyone that the Surface Pro wasn’t concerned about being a traditional tablet but rather a complete PC.

“Surface RT was designed as a tablet first. I want to be super-clear on what we designed Pro for. Very easy to understand. This should be the fastest PC you pick up. Period. People get confused because of the form factor.. It was designed as a PC. We often get judged as designing a heavier tablet and not enough battery life. Be very clear: What we designed was a PC,” Panay stated.

Panay also mentioned that the Surface devices were designed with organizations in mind, even though organizations were not the primary target during launch. Microsoft started off selling these devices in the consumer market and is now beginning to focus more on selling these devices to organizations and businesses.
