Here is why Insomniac's Sunset Overdrive is exclusive to the Xbox One

Later this year, Sunset Overdrive will launch on the Xbox One as an exclusive for the platform. But did you know that Sunset Overdrive became an Xbox One exclusive because Microsoft allowed Insomniac to retain the rights to the game?

Insomniac, the developer behind Sunset Overdrive, previously worked exclusively with Sony, dishing out massively popular franchises such as Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet and Clank, and Resistance. Unfortunately, Insomniac does not own the rights to any of these games. Microsoft, on the other hand, told Insomniac they could hold the rights to Sunset Overdrive, as long as the game is exclusive to the Xbox One.

“We pitched it a few different places, and it was really important to [Insomniac CEO] Ted [Price] that we own the IP, so some of the conversations broke down over that. With Microsoft, they just came in very energetic and excited to work with Insomniac, period. And we’d heard some really good things about them and some resources that they would be allowing us to have,” Sunset Overdrive co-creator Marcus Smith told IGN in an interview.

Sunset Overdrive launched on the Xbox One platform later this year. You can take a look at a four minute first-look at the game via the embedded video below.
