App Studio overloads as Windows Phone 8.1 downloads swamp servers

As you may have heard, Windows Phone 8.1 is now available to download. If you were one of the countless people who followed the instructions to grab your copy of the latest version of Microsoft’s mobile operating system, you may have run into a little trouble.

Interest in Windows Phone 8.1 was so high — this is a major update that phone owners have been looking forward to for quite some time — that Microsoft’s App Studio was knocked offline as a download requests inundated the servers.

While the current release of Windows Phone 8.1 is, technically speaking, meant only for developers, Microsoft has not really put any obstacles in the way of anyone who fancies trying it out for themselves. The fact just about anyone can jump in and grab the update for themselves seems to have been too much for App Studio to handle.

Struggling under the sheer weight of traffic, many visitors found that the site was inaccessible, and the download took some time to complete. Now it seem as though things are back up and running, but this little wobble no doubt left many people frustrated for a few hours.

Were you successful in downloading Windows Phone 8.1? What are your thoughts on it so far?
