143,391 total apps in the Windows Store and the top Windows 8.1 apps as of Jan 5th

As of January 5th, there are 143,391 apps in the Windows Store. The Windows Store is close to reaching the 150,000 app milestone, which is no surprise since over a thousand apps are being added to the Store every week.

Let’s dive in and take a look at the most popular Windows 8.1 and Windows RT apps available in the Windows Store. We will go over some stats for the Windows Store, including the top five paid apps and top five free apps. Facebook, one again, remains the top free app in the Windows Store while Fruit Ninja once again snags the top spot in the paid category. None of the Angry Birds games are in the top-five paid category this week, yet again. It seems their popularity has dwindled. As of January 2nd, Microsoft will begin to offer a weekly Windows Store special where select apps, games, and Xbox titles are offered at a huge discount. Dubbed “Red Stripe Deals,” you can score a huge discount on popular titles.

Straight out of Microsoft Studios is a brand new gaming app for Windows 8.1 and Windows RT which promises console quality gaming. Cold Alley is a beautiful, immersive, and fun game that features a great story and places you in the cockpit of a jet fighter.

Microsoft also released yet another game for Windows 8.1 and Windows RT called Throne Together. In this addicting block-based puzzle game, you can built castles for royal clients and have a dragon assistant named Fidget!

For all you Snapchat lovers out there, ProSnap made its debut in the Windows Store earlier this week and is already trending in the Windows Store. ProSnap is the first third-party Snapchat app for Windows 8.1 and Windows RT. This is just the first release of the app, so expect to see app updates with bug fixes and feature additions.
