Microsoft Corp. today announced at 2011 International CES that the next version of Windows will support System on a Chip (SoC) architectures, including ARM-based systems from partners NVIDIA Corp., Qualcomm Inc. and Texas Instruments Inc. On the x86 architecture, Intel Corporation and AMD continue their work on low-power SoC designs that fully support Windows, including support for native x86 applications. Windows on ARM long time in the making

Ina Fried at All Things Digital reports that Microsoft's development plans for Windows on ARM was a long time in the making and was not a result of the recent emergence of the iPad and similar tablet devices:

    However, the move has been in the works for some time, according to a source familiar with Microsoft’s development plans. Indeed, the source said that ARM support has been part of the company’s earliest planning for the next version of Windows, a process that kicked off before Windows 7 hit store shelves in October 2009.
