Xbox 360 Top-Selling Console in U.S. for April 2011
Microsoft announced today in an e-mailed statement that the company’s flagship gaming and entertainment console, Xbox 360, was the top selling video game console in the United States for the month of April, with 297,000 units sold at retail.
Apparently, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 sales were up 60 percent compared to last year. Microsoft also claims that the Xbox 360 was the top selling gaming console for the month of April.
If you put it all together, all retail sales of consoles, software, and hardware peripherals totaled an astonishing $961.2 million dollars in U.S. sales. This is up by 20% compared to a year earlier when the total figures were $802.4 million dollars. Wonder how much impact Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console and Microsoft’s Kinect motion-sensing device made on the total figure?
With recent talks about the successor to the Xbox 360, dubbed the Xbox 720 or Xbox Next, one can imagine how much of an impact the new console will make to gaming sales.
In recent reports, we learned that Microsoft is planning on launching free-to-play games on its Xbox Live service. This will allow game publishers and developers to release games through the Xbox Live service for free. Users can then purchase additional content such as weapons, experience points, in-game currency, and perks though Xbox Live.Further reading: Kinect, Microsoft, Xbox 360
