Two weeks and counting — Xbox One day draws ever closer. But if you’ve got your console pre-ordered, or you’re planning on standing in line on the day to pick one up, you’d better hope and pray that your internet connection doesn’t let you down on the day. Why? There’s going to be an update to install, and it’s an important one.
The consoles that hit the stores will be sold with firmware that is out of date, and there will be an update available to install the moment you go online. This in itself may not be news to you — it was first revealed a few months ago — but until now it has not been known how important this day one update will be.
In an interview with Engadget, Microsoft senior director of product management Albert Penello said “Functionally, you will be able to do very little without taking the day one update.” When asked what console owners could expect to be able to do with their new purchase should the nightmare scenario of no internet occur, he said “Nothing. You need the Day One update. You’re gonna need to take this update. It’s not gonna be really an optional thing.”
So as you scurry home with your Xbox One under one arm and a bundle of games under the other, keep your fingers crossed that your ISP doesn’t fall over. It sounds as though you won’t be doing very much if you can’t get hold of the updateFurther reading: Microsoft, Xbox One
