Windows Store: The best, top, and most popular Windows 8 apps for the week of May 12th

Windows Store

It’s May 12th and its time to look at the best, top, and most popular Windows 8 apps currently available in the Windows Store. We will go over some stats for the Windows Store, as well as highlight an app for your downloading pleasures!

Currently in the Windows Store, the top five free apps in the United States based on popularity are:

  1. Skype
  2. Xbox SmartGlass
  3. Google Search
  4. Facebook Now
  5. Microsoft Solitaire Collection

Let’s not forget the top five paid apps currently in the Windows Store:

  1. Game Dev Tycoon
  2. The Harvest
  3. Bejeweled LIVE
  4. Fruit Ninja
  5. Angry Birds Star Wars

As of May 12th, there are 70924 apps in the Windows Store, an increase of 3,157 apps in just one week. Compared to last week, not much has changed in the top-free category, except for the addition of an app called “Facebook Now.” This app isn’t an official app from Facebook but is very popular with over 436 ratings. In the top-paid category, we see a new list compared to last week. Game Dev Tycoon has already reached the top of the paid list with over 870 reviews, with the majority of reviews being positive.

Every week, we will feature one app or game that we will rank as the “best” Windows Store app for the week. It doesn’t mean that this app is better than every other app out there, it just means that this app should get your attention this week. The following week, we will showcase another great app, and so on. So here we go:

Pac Pac Man

Pac Pac Man is a free app available in the Windows Store and is this week’s highlighted app. This Windows Store game is a port of the classic Pacman game. While the app itself is small in size and only weighs 306KB, the game is simple and easy to use. However, we found the controls to be a bit slow to respond, as we missed our turns and were eaten by ghosts. Regardless, its a great app and its worth trying out for yourself. The app already has 101 ratings.

WinBeta News Reader v2

Of course, we have to plug our new Windows Store app. Our new app was released a few days ago and features a whole new framework (based on C# and XAML), as well as support for Share, Snap, and Toast Notifications. Best of all its free. This app is a great way to read our latest news on your Surface device! Grab both app downloads by hitting the download links below!

Hit the download link below to snag the app and stay tuned for next week’s Windows Store highlight.
