Sphero BB-8 Droid

With Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens just four months away, the release of related merchandise has begun to unfold with numerous toys, clothes, and video games such as Star Wars Battlefront and Disney Infinity Version 3.0 being at the forefront.
One of the coolest bits of The Force Awakens merch to come out is the official BB-8 Droid from Sphero which manages to bring the franchise’s new droid to life through the use of the app-controlled Sphero technology. The Sphero BB-8 Droid requires the new Sphero app which is currently only on Android and iOS devices. The Sphero BB-8 Droid will not work with the current Sphero Windows Phone app unfortunately but the official Sphero Twitter account has confirmed to several users that a new Windows Phone app is in development though they have no specific timeline set for its release.

It is unfortunate that the new Windows Phone app wasn’t made in time for the droid’s release but it is a relief that Sphero hasn’t ignored the growing userbase completely. The Sphero BB-8 Droid is available today from Apple Stores, Best Buy, and the Sphero website for around US$150 and in addition to being completely controllable with the apps, it can also roam an area all on its own and can react to a user’s voice commands for a real Star Wars feel. Make sure to give the video a watch to see the little droid in all of its true magical glory. It’s definitely going to be a popular (though expensive) gift for fans this holiday season.

Will you be grabbing this cool droid now or will you be waiting for the Windows Phone app to launch further down the road? Share your thoughts with the WinBeta community in the comments below. May the Force be with you.
