For years, we’ve been waiting for an OS to dethrone Windows XP as the most widely used desktop OS. Now, in April, Windows 7 has finally taken over the top position from Windows XP in the US.

As reported by Royal Pingdom, the latest data from StatCounter for the first seven days of April shows Windows 7 with a 31.71% share compared to 31.56% for Windows XP. StatCounter bases its data on visitor stats from over three million websites. In comparison, Windows Vista was never able to overthrow XP.

When looking at worldwide market share, XP continues to dominate with a 46.87% share compared to 31.17% for Windows 7. The gap however continues to narrow and Windows 7 has already overtaken XP in a number of other countries including:

  • United Kingdom
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • France
  • Germany
  • Belgium
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Sweden
