Remember when we told you about the brand new Canary Channel that has been added to the Windows Insider Program?

Microsoft didn’t waste any time and has already released a Windows 11 Preview build to the above-mentioned Channel.

Regardless if you upgraded to Windows 11 or not, you might want to check out some of the upcoming features for version 22H2.

Now, let’s get right into this new Insider Preview build for Windows 11 and see what Microsoft has released to the Canary Channel.

What should I look for in Windows 11 build 25314?

Yes, it’s exactly as you heard. The Redmond tech giant has just launched the first Windows 11 Insider Preview build for the newly established Canary Channel.

The build number is 25314, and it actually contains some of the same new features that are in the Dev Channel release.

We’re going to take a more in-depth look and see what exactly Microsoft has envisioned this time around, as far as system changes go.

Remember that current Dev Channel Insiders are being migrated to the Canary Channel and they will be informed of this change via an email too.

Also important is the fact that those who want to remain on the Dev Channel will need to perform a clean install, which is usually the case when switching to a lower Channel.

With this new build, Microsoft is adding access key shortcuts to the XAML context menu in File Explorer, in case you didn’t know.

An access key is a one-keystroke shortcut that allows a keyboard user to quickly execute a command in the context menu.

You should know that each access key will correspond with a letter in the display name, as it’s part of an effort to make File Explorer more accessible.

Another notable change is the File Recommendations feature that is coming to File Explorer Home to bring users the most relevant file content right to their fingertips.

This feature will be available to users signed into Windows with an Azure Active Directory (AAD) account, so keep that in mind.

We also have to mention that Local Security Authority (LSA) protection helps protect against theft of secrets and credentials used for login by preventing unauthorized code from running in the LSA process and by preventing dumping of process memory.

On that note, starting with this upgrade, Microsoft will actually audit for a period of time to check for incompatibilities with LSA protection.

Furthermore, the Narrator will now retrieve updates to its Outlook support when the Narrator is started, and you can learn more about the work we did for Outlook in Chapter 5 of the Narrator User Guide.

Keep in mind that Microsoft has not added any additional functionality to our Outlook support, but this work will allow updates to the Outlook experience to be made through the Microsoft Store.

Changes and Improvements

[General]

In order to increase security in Windows 11, starting with this build and later we are disabling the Remote Mailslot Protocol by default.

The legacy Remote Mailslot Protocol is a simple, unreliable, insecure, and unidirectional inter-process communications protocol between a client and server and was introduced in Windows NT 3.1 and will be deprecated in a future Windows release.

If an application attempts to open a Remote Mailslot session over the SMB protocol, you may see one or more of the following errors:

  • 3025 ERROR_REMOTE_MAILSLOTS_DEPRECATED
  • “The requested operation failed. Remote mailslots have been deprecated.”

If your application still uses Remote Mailslot, contact your vendor about updating their software. The legacy Remote Mailslot is not secure and should not be used under any circumstances.

If you need to temporarily enable Remote Mailslot, run the following command in an elevated PowerShell console:

PS C:\> Set-SmbClientConfiguration -EnableMailslots $true
