Last week, Fast Ring Insiders discovered a brand new version of the Photos app for mobile, with a layout that looked very similar to the PC version. It seems that Microsoft may have pushed this update to Insiders by mistake, as a new update for the Photos app (version 2018.18011.13438.0) brings back the familiar mobile layout today.

The previous update made the Photos app almost a truly universal app, though some advanced features such as Story Remix were missing on mobile. However, this version was pretty laggy on low-end handsets and probably not a great experience overall. With this latest update, the Photos app has just returned to its former self, losing all its new editing tools along the way.

The previous version brought several new editing features, but it also had performance issues (image credit: Aggiornamenti Lumia).

Considering that Windows 10 Mobile is now in maintenance mode, it was very surprising to see such a big update for the Photos app last week. We don’t except the mobile OS to get new features (even through app updates) this year, but you never know. Anyway, Windows Insiders who keep their Windows phones on the Fast Ring should continue to get early access to app updates, and we’ll continue to keep an eye on the OS this year.
