Cuphead, the critically-acclaimed run and gun game known for its challenging levels and unique artistic direction will soon have its own animated series (via Polygon). The Cuphead show! Is currently in development for Netflix, and it will follow the adventures of Cuphead and Mugman across the Inkwell Isles.
According to the press release, “the new series will expand on the characters and world of Cuphead, with an animation style inspired by the classic Fleischer cartoons from the 1930s.” Cuphead creators Chad and Jared Moldenhauer will also serve as Executive Producers for the new series, along with Dave Wasson (Mickey Mouse Shorts) and Cosmo Segurson (Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling).
Since its launch on Xbox One and Windows back in September 2017, Cuphead went to sell four million units worldwide. That’s quite exceptional for what was Studio MDHR’s first game, and Cuphead also received many awards including Best Debut, Best Independent Game, and Best Art Direction at the 2017 Game Awards. The game was also praised for its jazz soundtrack, which also received several awards.
It’s good to know that the animated series will stay faithful to Cuphead’s gorgeous hand-drawn graphics, which really helped the indie game to stand out when it first appeared at Microsoft’s E3 2014 press conference. The Redmond giant was really inspired to secure Cuphead as a console launch exclusive on Xbox One, though the game has since been released on Nintendo Switch in April of this year. A new expansion called “The Delicious Last Course” is also coming to all platforms next year, after being delayed.
