System Shock reboot shown off at Gamescom 2022, slated for release later this year – onmsft.com

Among the many, many games shown off at Gamescom 2022 so far few have generated as much excitement as the upcoming remake of System Shock, especially for old school gamers.

For those who are unfamiliar with the franchise, System Shock was a series of 3D, first-person cyberpunk action-adventure games with a techno-horror twist, to which the Bioshock franchise is essentially a spiritual successor. The Deus Ex series is also heavily influenced by it. System Shock and System Shock 2 were PC games, seeing release on Windows, Mac OS, MS-DOS, and PC-98, OS X, and Linux.

The trailer for System Shock was featured at Gamescom 2022 Future Games Showcase, having been previously displayed at Summer of Gaming 2022 back in June.

The game is being developed by Nightdive Studios, who were responsible for the release of System Shock: Enhanced Edition back in 2015. The upcoming System Shock reboot was born out of a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2016. In 2018, development of the game was halted before being restarted with a new team. The initial 2020 release was pushed back to 2021, and again to 2022.

Hopefully it will all prove to have been worth it in the end when the game finally arrives. At present it is still set for that 2022 release, though with no definite launch date this late in the year, fans probably shouldn’t start holding their collective breath for the game just yet.
