Steam usage data shows combined Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 share at 27.81%
According to data from Valve’s Steam Hardware and Software Survey for the month ending August 2014, Microsoft’s latest operating system usage has increased to a combined total of 27.81% (up from the previous month’s 26.92%) for both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. This factors in both 32bit and 64bit of Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.
This data is collected by Valve’s Steam game client, for those that did not know, and measures hardware and software stats on a monthly basis. This data indicates how much share an operating system has (among other stats) when it comes to gaming via Steam.
According to the data, Windows 8 32bit is used by 0.43% of Steam gamers, which is a 0.01% drop compared to the previous month. Windows 8 64bit saw a 7.86% share, which is a drop of 0.39%. Windows 8.1 32bit, on the other hand, saw a 0.51% share, which is an increase of 0.03%. Windows 8.1 64bit, which appears to be the most popular, snagged a 19.01% share, an increase of 1.26% over the previous month.
Windows 7 64bit saw a slight decrease of 0.84%, dropping its share to 48.08%, while Windows 7 32bit actually went up in share by 0.17%, accounting for 11.85% of Steam gamers. Comparatively, MacOS 10.9.4 64 bit saw an increase in share to 2.03% (a 1.16% increase).
Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 now have a combined share of 27.81% and gamers seem to be slowly switching over to Microsoft’s latest operating system as the months go by. Windows 7 remains as the operating system of choice for Steam gamers.
