Sony Online Entertainment is no longer part of Sony as it has recently been acquired by Columbus Nova, a “multi-strategy investment firm” based in New York. The division has also been renamed to ‘Daybreak Game Company’ but all of the divisions’ current development projects are still on course.
This acquisition means that Sony Online Entertainment will from herein out run as an independent game development studio that is no longer shackled to Sony and its PlayStation products. The division has formally announced that as a multi-platform game company, it will develop games for the Xbox, mobile devices, and more, in addition to the PlayStation.
In the past, Sony Online Entertainment has been known for its popular MMO titles including The Matrix Online, Star Wars Galaxies, DC Universe Online, EverQuest, and many more. Unfortunately, this isn’t the same division that brought Journey to the world, so don’t expect to see that game make it to the Xbox One anytime soon.
The Daybreak team said on Reddit that they will now have access to even more resources than what was available to them under Sony so we should continue to expect more quality titles from them in the future.Further reading: Acquisitions, Microsoft, Sony, Xbox One
