Microsoft’s latest move to expand the reach of its Home Use Program to now include support for Office 365 Home and Personal may be its Trojan Horse to increase its subscription numbers over the long term.

Each quarter Microsoft rolls out its impressive Azure revenue numbers and its, often equally impressive, Office 365 subscription numbers and now it seems the company may be in the midst of padding those numbers by allowing businesses to issue additional copies of the consumer-grade productivity suite to employees.

According to a report from Thurrott.com, the expansion of Microsoft’s HUP happened recently and with relatively low fanfare but comes with all the pro-consumer additions employers and employees could want, such as stacked licensing, which gives current Office 365 Home or Personal subscriptions an additional year when applied.

Information about the switch is sparse and Microsoft has yet to respond to comment, but we’ll update accordingly.
