Skype has surpassed the 500 million download mark on the Google Play Store

Skype has been around for a long time, and many questioned whether it was the right decision for Microsoft to acquire Skype rather than focus on growing its own MSN Messenger service. 4 years following the acquisition and Skype has become the standard video communication service on a global scale.

It was recently noticed that the Skype app on Android has surpassed 500 million downloads, and while we don’t know how many of those were unique it is still a significant milestone. Millions of customers are using the Microsoft service on a competing platform, and that is likely to be the case on iOS and Windows devices too.

In recent years Microsoft has attempted to integrate Skype into many of its software products and services including Windows, Xbox, Outlook, and Office 365. Windows Phone devices can even upgrade a phone call to Skype on the fly. Skype is likely to be even further integrated into Windows 10 which should be ready later this year. So was is a good acquisition for Microsoft? I would think so, especially when the service is so popular that it’s used as a verb.
