Shortening URLs has long been a good method of sending links that would normally be too long. For example, they can be useful on Twitter where you are limited by the amount of characters that you can place into a tweet.

Short.y for Windows 10 has just released. The app uses the is.gd shortening service to generate shortened URLs. As a Universal Windows app, you can shorten URLs from any of your Windows 10 devices; the store listing currently shows support for:

  • PC
  • Windows 10 Mobile
  • Surface Hub

Features of the app include:

  • Shorten URLs
  • Custom identifiers
  • View statistics of your shortened URLs
  • Share URLs from other apps, such as Microsoft Edge, and Short.y will shorten it for you, whilst copying it to your clipboard automatically
  • Extract links from text shared to it

Extracting links from text means that you can share text from other apps to Short.y, and it will scan the text, extract any links from it, and then create shortened URLs for each of them.

This app works well with social media apps, such as Twitter and Messenger, as you can quickly share links from Microsoft Edge to the app, have it copy the shortened version to your clipboard, then just quickly paste it into the social app of your choice.

Short.y is available in the Windows Store now.
