Rumor: Microsoft could be looking to acquire Upwork

Upwork and Microsoft

According to sources close to USA Herald, Microsoft may be seriously considering acquiring Upwork in the near future.

Upwork is a popular online platform that was born out of the merging of Elance and oDesk in 2013. Its main purpose is to connect freelancers with individuals and organizations in need of workers for projects and currently has over 12 million registered freelancers on its main site.

Upwork would be a natural acquisition for Microsoft given their increased focus in Enterprise solutions and their purchase of LinkedIn back in 2016. Microsoft partnered with Upwork earlier this month for its new Microsoft 365 freelance toolkit project which is designed to help companies manage their freelancers.

While such a move would make a lot of sense for both sides, this is still classed as a rumor for now until an official announcement is made.
