In a response to recent reports that they would be returning to smartphone manufacturing, Nokia has issued an official statement denying such claims and reaffirming their recent decision to focus on other business models.
“Nokia notes recent news reports claiming the company communicated an intention to manufacture consumer handsets out of a R&D facility in China. These reports are false, and include comments incorrectly attributed to a Nokia Networks executive. Nokia reiterates it currently has no plans to manufacture or sell consumer handsets.”
It should be noted that the statement specifically denies plans to manufacture handsets out of an R&D facility in China and doesn’t categorically deny any future plans to manufacture from other locations (if you want to be technical).
The Nokia brand has evolved recently with a new focus on licensing out technologies, patents and potential future development of wireless network gear. What do you think about the future of Nokia? Are you expecting them to return to smartphone manufacturing or will they continue to grow in other areas?Further reading: Microsoft, Nokia, Windows Phone
