After the initial announcement of Windows Apps (unofficially called “universal apps” by many) which have the potential to run on all of Microsoft’s products ranging from Windows Phone and Windows 10 PCs to Xbox One, HoloLens, and even Microsoft Band, it was only a matter of time before companies began announcing their inevitable new and improved versions of their current apps.
In a post on Reddit, developers have announced that the official Reddit app for Xbox One, ReddX, would be getting an update in the near future in addition to an expansion into all other markets with the exception of China (where its content would likely be too controversial for government standards) before being completely rewritten as a Windows App with plans to run on Xbox One, Windows 10, Windows Phone and even Microsoft’s new headset, HoloLens.
While no other information was given on how the new ReddX would look or function on HoloLens, it’s exciting to see companies developing for the new platform. The fact that companies are considering these new platforms is most likely due to the convenient nature of Windows Apps that only require companies to create one version that runs on all Windows systems instead of a separate version for each platform, which has been the case until now.
Earlier this year, VLC launched the universal version of its popular media player app though for now they seem to be focusing exclusively on the Windows and Windows Phone experience instead of branching out to Microsoft’s other devices (would you really use VLC on your Microsoft Band anyway?).
