Microsoft has decided to use Nokia’s technology to power maps on Windows Phone 8. This info was revealed at the Windows Phone Summit. The service will use NAVTEQ data, and offer offline map support, map control for developers, and turn-by-turn directions.
Microsoft’s decision to use Nokia technology to power its maps service is not a total surprise: it already uses Nokia data to provide enhanced traffic condition functionality for Bing Maps and Windows Phone devices. Nokia mapping technology will add global NAVTEQ map data, as well as offline map support and turn-by-turn directions. There will also be Map control for developers.
