Talk of support for specific digital assistants was noticeably absent during the big Surface Earbuds reveal during Microsoft’s event last night but our very own Arif was able to speak to several Microsoft representatives afterwards and confirmed that the Surface Earbuds will indeed be able to connect to whatever assistant a user uses on their computer, tablet, or smartphone.
Support for Microsoft’s own Cortana and Google’s Google Assistant were specifically mentioned by name but the Surface Earbuds will also support Siri on Apple’s iOS devices as well and any other digital assistants.

This support is apparently possible due to the fact that the Surface Earbuds will simply be connecting to whatever service is active on the paired smart device rather than running native digital assistant software. Users are also expected to be able to switch assistants as long as they’re available on their device.
Microsoft’s Surface Earbuds are expected to launch later this year for around $249 and will be available in a white and grey variant. Pre-orders for the Surface Earbuds aren’t open yet but you can read all about our own hands-on impressions and watch our video coverage of the new accessories here.
