Microsoft sues two Chinese IT companies for installing pirated software

Microsoft is seeking monetary damages from two IT companies in Beijing China who are accused of operating two websites that offer e-commerce solutions to small and medium-sized companies and installing pirated Microsoft Windows, Office, Visual Studio and other Microsoft software on the companies’ computers.

Microsoft is seeking $1.59 million dollars (10 million Yaun) from Ming Wan Zhi Da Technology Co Ltd and Ming Wan Information Technology Co Ltd as well as a statement of apology from the two companies in the country’s main newspaper “People’s Daily.” Microsoft claims that 10 million Yaun is the estimated economic loss the software giant incurred, however, the defense is arguing otherwise claiming that the estimated loss is overly exaggerated. There will be a second trial that will take place due to the difference in estimates between the two parties. China has been cracking down on the use of pirated software as of late, so this news comes as no surprise.
