In a post on LinkedIn, Microsoft President Brad Smith takes stock of the issues that faced the tech industry in 2018 and looks ahead listing the top 10 issues that the tech industry will need to address for 2019. Here’s a look at the top 10 tech issues and developments to look out for in 2019, as referenced by Microsoft’s Smith:

  1. PRIVACY

  2. DISINFORMATION

  3. PROTECTIONISM IN THE PACIFIC

  4. DIGITAL DIPLOMACY

  5. ETHICS CHALLENGES FOR AI

  6. AI AND THE ECONOMY

  7. THE PEOPLE SIDE OF TECHNOLOGY

  8. RURAL BROADBAND

  9. SOVEREIGNTY, HUMAN RIGHTS AND THE CLOUD

  10. TECH GROWTH AND COMMUNITIES

While Smith’s top 10 list is far from the only important issues tech faces, it doesn’t offer solutions. This list could easily be a list of required courses for a degree in Digital Business Management. It seems as if there is a new privacy leak or issue on an almost daily basis. Recently, Amazon and Ring doorbells are once such alarming privacy example.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are just beginning to show what they can do to reap benefits for the technology world. With and without proper governance by the tech industry of these technologies, AI, machine learning, and other emerging technologies can bring big positives as well as unforeseen negatives on people and the world as a whole.
