Microsoft announced today the acquisition of DataSense, a data management platform developed by BrightBytes, an education data analytics company based in San Francisco. The BrightBytes DataSense team will join Microsoft’s global education team and help the company provide better data analytics for schools.

“Together with DataSense, we are committed to help schools migrate to the cloud, simplifying data management and providing explicit security and control over their data,” wrote Steve Liffick, General Manager in the Education product team at Microsoft. “We believe this school-controlled, secure starting point in Azure will make it easier to use analytics to help improve student outcomes, while also servicing the typical data transfer and management needs of a school or district IT team,” he added.

Microsoft and BrightBytes didn’t share financial details about the transaction, and the latter will continue to develop its data analytics solution. The Redmond giant plans to start integrating DataSense technology into its own education products in the coming months, with no disruption for existing DataSense customers.
