When it comes to smartphones, Microsoft generated the most buzz at their October 6 hardware event when they unveiled the Lumia 950 and 950XL flagships. Sporting high-end processors, Windows Hello, and Continuum, the new halo devices have garnered the most press and the most excitement. That doesn’t mean Microsoft has forgotten about it’s newest budget offering, the Lumia 550.
Offering up a fine mix of low price at $139 and decent specs, the Lumia 550 is intended to maintain Microsoft’s relative success in global entry-level smartphone sales. Here are some of the specs, in case you’ve forgotten:
- 4.7-inch HD720 display
- 1GB RAM
- 8GB storage
- 5MP rear camera, 2MP front camera
- MicroSD slot
- 2100 mAh battery
The Lumia 550 will be available in December, not coincidentally right around the time that Windows 10 Mobile is released. Better yet, the budget phone supports Microsoft’s newest mobile OS, and so no worries about being left behind.
Here’s Microsoft’s promotional video for the Lumia 550, which highlights the smartphone’s access to Office 365 Mobile, Cortana, and other Windows 10 Mobile goodness–all at a remarkably low price.
It’s great to see Microsoft keeping options open in the smartphone space. High-end halo devices are good and necessary, but some folks don’t need all of the bells and whistles.
