How to enable an early version of the new Start Screen in Windows 10 build 9879
We recently discovered the beginnings of what appears to be the new Start Screen / Continuum mode in the most recent Windows Technical Preview. The Start Screen, being very early in development is very buggy and broken, however we understand that some of you wish to try it out.
Well, we’ve got you a simple guide for enabling the new Start Screen. We must warn you, it’s super broken. We don’t advise you use it on anything right now, especially tablets as the Start Screen doesn’t even hit full screen mode yet.
If you wish to enable it, follow these steps:
- Open regedit (WIN+R and type regedit.exe)
- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell\Launcher\ (The “Launcher” key may not exist, if not just create a new key)
- Add a new DWORD 32-bit
- Name it UseExperience
- Change it’s value to 1
- Restart Explorer
Once that’s done, you’ll have access to the new Start Screen in Windows 10. We must warn you, the Start Screen enable-able in 9879 isn’t anything like what’s seen in the photo above. To return to the previous Start experience, just change the value back to 0.Further reading: Microsoft, Windows 10
