Downloading OS updates to the MicroSD card now possible with Lumia Denim

Now that the Lumia Demin firmware update is slowly rolling out to all WP8 Lumia devices, more and more of its included features are coming to light. Unfortunately for some users with low-end Lumias that have a low storage capacity, upgrading Windows Phone can be rather frustrating.

Users have previously reported that upgrading the OS will result in a warning that there isn’t enough free storage on the device to download an update, even if your Lumia has a blank 128GB MicroSD card installed, Microsoft’s flagship OS wasn’t smart enough to detect it, but that changes with Lumia Denim.

Users running Denim will now be able to download future updates, like the upcoming Windows 10 for phones directly to the MicroSD card before installing it. This way Lumia owners won’t have to go on a personal content delete-spree just to install an update.

Downloading to the MicroSD card will be possible on the Lumia 530, 630, 730, 830 and all of the different variations of those smartphones. Unfortunately, this feature won’t be possible on the previous generation of Lumia devices including the Lumia 520, 620, 720, 820, 1320, 1520 and their different variations.

We should know more about the Lumia Denim update as it continues to roll out to existing devices and will keep you updated on what’s new.

Thanks for the tip, Michael!
