Desktop Gadgets are back in Windows 8.1, unofficially
Remember Desktop Gadgets, those cool little gadgets floating on your desktop or sidebar back in Windows Vista or Windows 7? Well, they are unofficially back for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 thanks to a third party. However, use it at your own risk.
Microsoft originally introduced Desktop Gadgets with Windows Vista back in 2007 and eventually pulled support of gadgets from Windows 8 amidst security concerns. On top of that, the company retired the Windows Live Gallery which was a source for desktop gadgets.
But if you are a risk taker and want to install Dekstop Gadgets on Windows 8.1, all you have to do is hit the download link to snag the Gadgets and install them. The guys over at WinAero have put together an installer that has most if not all of the Desktop Gadgets.
Back in 2012, Microsoft notified the world that they were aware of security vulnerabilities in gadgets, subsequently discontinuing them. Businesses don’t really have a use for gadgets and removing them or simply not having them on your Windows installation only reduced your attack profile.
