Microsoft founder Bill Gates announced today a “strategy” to help bring safe and clean sanitation services to millions of poor people in the developing world. In other words, Bill Gates is dedicating $42 million dollars towards reinventing the toilet.
Apparently, Bill Gates and his foundation are working on creating inexpensive toilers that improve the living conditions of millions of people. Gates hopes to create convenience and affordability with these new toilets. In fact, these new toilers will also be easy to install and cost nearly $.05 cents a day to maintain.
“No innovation in the past 200 years has done more to save lives and improve health than the sanitation revolution triggered by invention of the toilet. But it did not go far enough. It only reached one-third of the world. What we need are new approaches. New ideas. In short, we need to reinvent the toilet,” said Sylvia Mathews Burwell, President of the foundation’s Global Development Program.
It seems that these new toilets will have a significant impact on the lives of millions of people worldwide by reducing the percentage of those who do not have access to basic sanitation. Here’s a cool statistic: “Access to safe sanitation reduces child diarrhea by 30 percent and significantly increases school attendance.”
“Disease caused by unsafe sanitation accounts for roughly half of all hospitalizations in the developing world. This statistic is unacceptable, as is the fact that many decision makers remain reluctant to talk about sanitation, further stigmatizing the topic, and perpetuating a crisis whose solutions are within our reach,” said Prince Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands.
Its not the first time we have heard about a new toilet idea, as the company Kohler came out with a new toiler for those who want the luxury of ambient lighting, surround sound, and touch screen controls while using the loo.
