Password protected sharing is a feature in Windows that helps stop other Windows users from accessing your computer files. In almost all cases, it comes handy when you have multiple accounts on your Windows computer (which is mostly made possible through setting up separate user accounts.), and you want to prevent unauthorized access to your PC.

In some cases, however, you might’ve to override this rule. For instance, if you’ve a common work computer, and you want multiple people to access the account, then you might’ve to turn off the password protection sharing feature in your Windows. Here’s how you can get started.

How to turn off password protection sharing in Windows 10 or Windows 11

Turning off the password protection in your Windows is a pretty straightforward affair. All you have to do is access the Control Panel—a central hub to change your Windows hardware and software settings—and follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Start menu search bar, type in ‘control panel,’ and select the best match.
  2. Select Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center.
  3. From the left-hand panel, click on Change advanced sharing settings.
  4. Expand All Networks tab, select the Turn off password protected sharing and click on Save changes.

The password protected sharing feature will be successfully turned off in this way, letting users access different accounts easily.

For some reason if the above method fails, you can then try to disable the password protection sharing through the Windows Registry. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the Start menu search bar, type in ‘run,’ and select the best match.
  2. In the Run dialog box, type in control ‘userpasswords2’ and hit Enter.
  3. User account will be launched. Now, under the Users for this computer section, click on Guest.
  4. Select Reset Password…, leave the New Password and Confirm Password field empty, and click on OK.

As you’ve disabled the user password, the password protected sharing feature will get automatically disabled through this.
